Chestnut Class Curriculum Letter: Autumn 2021

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back to Year 5 and Year 6! The children seem to be settling in well and I’m looking forward to working with them this year. I wanted to use this letter to go over some of the routines and changes this year.

As usual, Mr Tyrrell will be leading P.E. across the school. He is working with Chestnut on Tuesday afternoons so, for now, the class can continue to come to school in their P.E. kit and wear it all day. Please make sure to also send a coat as we will be going to the field as often as possible, even in the rain.

In addition to this, our second P.E. session will be led my Mr Collinge who also works for Tyrrell Sports. Mr Collinge will be with Chestnut every Wednesday afternoon. This session will happen at school although children can wear P.E. kits all day in preparation for this.

As well as Mr Collinge, we welcome Mrs Fiddler to the school. She is a specialist French teacher who will work in KS2. Year 5/6 will be with her for an hour every Tuesday afternoon.

The children will be set homework on a Thursday which needs to be completed by the following Tuesday. Homework will be a mixture of online and book work (books will be sent home when they are ready).Online work will be done through MyMaths, Times Table Rockstars and Spelling Shed – these are up and running now. We will also have access to have Google Classroom so topic homework and spellings will be on there and I am happy for homework to be done in books or online through Google – whichever is more convenient for you.

I will send home emails with login details once we have checked they all work!

In reading we will continue to use Accelerated Reader (AR), which assesses reading levels through vocabulary and comprehension. Children have been given Reading Record books for them/you to record and make notes in. We will also add book quiz and diagnostic scores in here for you to see. Children need to have access to their reading record all the time so books can live in school bags.

Please continue to read at home with your child read in line with our homework policy (at least 15 minutes a day).

Spellings and Times Tables

These will be set weekly and form part of homework tasks. Tests will happen on Fridays in school. Each child has two little books to do these tests in and these will need to be in school every Friday.

Other Staff

Mrs Rowe will be with the class to do R.E. each Wednesday, and forest school starts on Friday 17th September for Chestnut Class with Y5 going in the morning and Y6 after lunch. School uniform isn’t needed on forest school days.

Please see the earlier email for the correct clothing for these sessions.

Please let me know if you have any other questions or have problems getting into any of the online accounts. I look forward to meeting with you over the next few weeks and months – it’s good to be back!

Kind Regards

Mr Kay
